Performance
Founded in 1924, the New York Mandolin Orchestra (NYMO) has performed for over 90 years and is one of the oldest continuously performing mandolin orchestras in the United States. Our primary goals are to increase interest in the mandolin and promote the mandolin family of instruments and mandolin music, with emphasis on the classical style. Most of our instruments are in the mandolin family: mandolin, mandola, mandocello, and mandobass. The concertina, harmonica, flute and recorder complement these and give our orchestra its special sound. Our group includes professional and amateur musicians who play a diverse musical repertoire ranging from bluegrass to classical music. We encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about our orchestra to attend a rehearsal. Contact us to confirm the dates and location.

The New York Mandolin Orchestra is a not-for-profit organization. We thank the West Side Foundation for their continuing support and the Lower Manhattan Creative Council for their 2024 Creative Engagement Grant.
Founded in 1924, the New York Mandolin Orchestra was originally affiliated with the Jewish Community newspaper Freiheit, and was first known as the New York Freiheit Mandolin Orchestra. Its members were immigrant musicians from Eastern Europe who had brought their instruments with them to the New World. In 1920s, a number of other mandolin orchestras were operating in New York — many in connection with labor unions. These included the Mandolin Symphonette, the New York Mandolin Symphony, the Workmen's Circle Mandolin Orchestra, the International Ladies Garment Workers Union Orchestra, the International Workers Order Mandolin Orchestra and the Jewish Peoples' Fraternal Order Orchestra. Their main orientation was classical mandolin music. By the 1980s, members were older; many died, while others moved away. As the older orchestras disbanded some remaining members joined our orchestra. The orchestra’s earlier focus on classical music expanded to include bluegrass, jazz, show tunes, folk and ethnic music. Performances were interrupted only in 2020 during the Covid pandemic, when live rehearsals were suspended into the fall of 2021, when rehearsals resumed. The New York Mandolin Orchestra has continued uninterrupted music-making into its ninth decade! Today we are the only full-fledged mandolin orchestra in the City of New York with members from all Boroughs of New York City, Nassau, Orange, Dutchess and Rockland Counties, and the State of New Jersey.
